  1. Ajit Pai Moves Up to FCC Chair

President Donald Trump has named FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai to succeed Tom Wheeler as chairman of the Commission. Pai, 44, assumed office as a commissioner on May 14, 2012, under the Obama administration. His nomination still must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Wheeler stepped down as FCC chairman on Jan. 20. In a statement, Pai said: "I am deeply grateful to the president of the United States for designating me the 34th chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. I look forward to working with the new administration, my colleagues at the commission, members of Congress, and the American public to bring the benefits of the digital age to all Americans." Pai is seen as more friendly to the service provider industry than his predecessor. He opposed utility-style Title II Internet regulation , tougher ISP privacy rules and FCC efforts to " unlock the set-top box ." In a statement, Michael Powell, president and CEO of the NCTA, said in part: "During his tenure on the Commission, Chairman Pai has consistently demonstrated a common-sense philosophy that consumers are best served by a robust marketplace that encourages investment, innovation and competition." The other current FCC commissioners include Mignon Clyburn and Michael O'Rielly. President Obama nominated Jessica Rosenworcel for a second term earlier this month, but the nomination has not yet been confirmed. Thus, at least one commission seat is open, possibly two. The Trump administration has not yet nominated anyone for either seat.
