  1. DOCSIS 3.1 Driving Broadband Access Market

According to the Dell'Oro Group, DOCSIS 3.1 CPE is projected to drive short-term growth for the $13 billion worldwide broadband access market, including PON, DSL and cable. The research house expects the market to be driven primarily by cable customer premises equipment (CPE) device deployments over the next few years. Short-term growth is projected to be due to the transition to DOCSIS 3.1. "The broadband access market will be driven by cable CPE in the near term, with PON driving growth in the long term," said Alam Tamboli, senior analyst at Dell'Oro. "In recent years, cable operators have been investing heavily in their central office infrastructure, deploying fully integrated CCAP platforms that are, in many cases, capable of supporting DOCSIS 3.1. Now with the infrastructure in place, we think cable operators will begin to significantly increase spending on DOCSIS 3.1 CPE devices to give customers greater broadband speeds in a bid to deter customer attrition and increase customer net additions." Other findings indicate: PON is forecast to be the broadband access market's growth source starting in 2019. GPON, rather than EPON, technology is expected to continue to dominate PON shipments. G.fast is expected to drive demand in the DSL market as ADSL steeply declines and VDSL slows.
